History of Salem OR

Salem is known as the capital of the state of Oregon. Inhabited by native Americans, the first settlers set foot in the area in 1812. They were animal trappers and food gatherers from fur trading companies in Astoria. The Jason Lee Methodist Mission was the first permanent settlement in 1840. In 1851, Salem was established as the territorial capital and in 1857 incorporation into a city was achieved. When statehood was achieved in 1859, Salem became the state capital.
